Detroit Auto Show scales down – sort of

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

What’s going on in Detroit? Seems that the auto show is missing not only some major manufacturers – Nissan, Mitsubishi, Suzuki, Land Rover, Rolls-Royce and Ferrari – but also some of the glitz associated with past years. No doubt in part due to the state of our economy, some exhibitors have scaled back their displays due to the scruity of the consumer and the government. Hybrids, electrics and future concepts are focused on over outdated gas guzzlers.

Speaking of hybids, Honda is showing their new Insight. Did I blink or didn’t Honda discontinue the Insight years ago? Of course, the new incarnation has been updated with a roomier 5-passenger cabin. “The new Insight Concept also benefits from improvements to Honda’s latest IMA® technology, including reduced size and cost along the way.”

The new Mini Cooper S Convertible is also being introduced at the show. Huh? While it is not a hybid, the Mini is still selling like hot cakes in the US.

Of course, now every model is green. Case in point, Fords 500HP Shelby GT 500, Audi’s R8, Lambourghini, and Jaguar’s XKR, to name a few.
